State Supt. Janet Barresi Welcomes Attendees to Safe and Healthy Schools Conference

State Superintendent of Public Instruction Janet Barresi will give opening remarks at the annual Safe and Healthy Schools Conference next week in Oklahoma City.

The free professional development conference, sponsored by the Oklahoma State Department of Education and the Oklahoma Department of Mental Health and Substance Abuse Services, is set for Monday, Nov. 14, 2011, from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Magnuson Hotel and Meridian Convention Center (formerly the Clarion Meridian Conference Center).

“This important conference highlights some of the greatest areas of danger for our children,” Barresi said. “These include bullying, substance abuse, suicide and overall health. I would encourage anyone who works with youth to consider attending to gain a better grasp of helping them avoid some of these devastating behaviors.”

A variety of workshops will be offered including bullying prevention, health education, substance abuse prevention, mental health concerns, and suicide prevention. Workshops will be taught by professional educators and nationally known health, safety, and mental health experts. Several youth presentations will be offered to highlight youth–led organizations in schools.

Licensed Professional Counselors and Licensed Marital Family Therapists can earn six hours of continuing education credit, and law enforcement professionals can earn six hours of credit for Council on Law Enforcement Education and Training (CLEET).

Educators, youth serving organizations, community members and parents may register on site the day of the conference. For more information, contact Kalee Isenhour at (405) 521-2106.
