National Board Certified stipends bill passes subcommittee

A House subcommittee on Monday, April 2, 2012, passed a bill that would pay National Board Certified stipends for the next 10 years.

National Board Certified teachers, school psychologists, speech-language pathologists and audiologists would receive $5,000 stipends for the upcoming fiscal year and the next 10 years under Senate Bill 1879.  The Oklahoma House of Representatives Appropriations and Budget Subcommittee on Education voted 10-1 Monday to pass the bill. Rep. Ann Coody, R-Lawton, the House author of the bill, said the bill keeps a promise to educators.

SB 1879 would require the state to pay the stipends to educators already certified for the number of years remaining on the 10-year National Board Certification.

The bill replaces a section of state law that says the stipends will be paid only if funds are available.
