ELEVATE: Married to the job: John Rex Charter School

Located in the heart of downtown Oklahoma City, John Rex is one of Oklahoma’s newest charter schools.

In 2014, the school’s doors opened to the public. John Rex currently enrolls 375 students, pre-K through 3rd grade, with a waiting list of about 250 students. Enrollment will continue to grow as a new grade is added each year through 6th grade.

Unlike many school districts in Oklahoma, John Rex is not experiencing a teacher shortage; in fact, the school has had success recruiting teachers from all over the United States. Wes and Caylie Dicken moved from Indiana to Oklahoma last summer specifically to teach at John Rex.

“The opportunity came up for us to come visit John Rex and see the school and the downtown area, and we really loved it,” Caylie said.

Caylie’s husband, Wes, teaches kindergarten at John Rex and loves the opportunities his students are given daily.

“The building is gorgeous, built for the 21st century student and 21st century classes,” he said. “That’s the direction that education should be going. We saw that, and for our careers, we wanted to take this opportunity to be a part of this great school.”
