Paraprofessionals play important roles in improving student achievement in schools. They are responsible for reinforcing and augmenting a teacher's effort in the classroom. The para not only provides key support to the teacher, but especially to students with disabilities in the classroom who need instruction or assistance, as keeping with their IEP.

What qualifications must paraprofessionals meet under the No Child Left Behind Act of 2001 (NCLB)?
Answer: NCLB required that paraprofessionals have a secondary school diploma or its recognized equivalent and meet one of the following qualifications if the paraprofessional will perform instructional duties in a Title I, Part A program:
- Have completed at least two years of study at an institution of higher education defined as completion of 48 semester hours of college coursework; or
- Have obtained an associate’s degree (or higher); or
- Have taken and passed the WorkKeys test, Parapro Test or the Oklahoma General Education Test
Title I, Part A Paraprofessionals Overview
In addition to the Title I, Part A requirements listed above, a special education paraprofessional has to meet the following:
- Complete the Oklahoma Special Education Paraprofessional Training (Career Technology Centers) or other State approved Local Education Agency (LEA) training.
- Complete and maintain training and skills in Cardiovascular Pulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) and First Aid.
- Complete training in Universal Precautions/Bloodborne Pathogens Training.
- Complete an additional 6 hours of professional development and Universal Precautions/Bloodborne Pathogens each school year thereafter.
Special Education Paraprofessional Training
The Oklahoma State Department of Education and the Oklahoma Department of Career and Technology Education partnered to create the required training resource for special education teachers. Training is provided through CareerTech centers. LEAs may apply to provide the required paraprofessional training as an alternative.
Instructors providing the required special education paraprofessional training must meet the following qualifications:
- Make application to the OSDE-SES;
- Hold a current Oklahoma Special Education Teacher Certificate;
- Have a minimum of two (2) years of experience teaching in a special education classroom;
- Receive a recommendation from a school district administrator; and
- Attend a Train-the-Trainer (TTT) session provided, at no charge, by the OSDE-SES.
Upon completion of the TTT, the OSDE-SES will issue a certificate indicating the special education paraprofessional trainer number (“SEPT”).
