Former Assistant State Superintendent Dr. Ramona Paul Passes Away

State Superintendent Janet Barresi learned of the death of Dr. Ramona Paul on Sunday night. Dr. Paul was a former Oklahoma Assistant State Superintendent of Education.
“I was deeply saddened to hear of the death of Dr. Paul,” Barresi said. “She is the pioneer who made early childhood education possible for the state of Oklahoma. We want to recognize all of her tremendous contributions to the profession and to students and families throughout our state. Our prayers and thoughts go out to her family.”
Paul suffered a stroke while vacationing in Idaho. News of her death came early Monday morning.
Paul began working for the State Department of Education in 1977 as an early childhood specialist. During her time as Assistant State Superintendent, Oklahoma was ranked No. 1 in the nation for early childhood. She retired from the department in 2011.
Dr. Paul previously served on the faculty at Oklahoma State University, at Texas Women’s University in Denton, at the University of Alabama , and at Purdue University in Indiana where she completed a Ph.D. In addition, she worked as a graduate assistant at Iowa State University. She also served as adjunct faculty at the University of Oklahoma and East Central University as well as in administrative positions in Oklahoma City and Edmond Public Schools.
Dr. Paul was named Oklahoma Today’s 2009 Oklahoman of the Year.
