State Board of Education Member Bill Shdeed to Receive OCU Law Lifetime Achievement Award

Oklahoma State Board of Education member William F. “Bill” Shdeed will be honored with the Justice Marian P. Opala Award for Lifetime Achievement by the Oklahoma City University School of Law on Saturday night.

Shdeed is one of three alumni of the OCU School of Law and a leading local law firm to be honored Saturday at “Lights up the Night,” the 2013 Awards and Reunion Gala for the law school.

“Mr. Shdeed is a wonderful individual, and I am thrilled for him to be recognized with this award,” State Superintendent of Public Instruction Janet Barresi said. “I’m thankful to his service on the State Board of Education and his dedication to the students of Oklahoma. I congratulate him for receiving this distinction from a group of his peers – the highest honor.”

Other honorees are Oklahoma Speaker of the House, Rep. T.W. Shannon, as Outstanding Young Alumnus; Vicki Z. Behenna as the Distinguished Law Alumna; and Pierce Couch Hendrickson Baysinger and Green, LLP as the Law Firm Mark of Distinction recipient.

Proceeds from the gala will benefit the J. William Conger Courtroom inside the future home of the Oklahoma City University School of Law.

Shdeed is a graduate of Oklahoma City University and earned his law degree from the university’s law school in 1965. He is currently a member of the Oklahoma Bar Association and the Federal Bar Association, and is a Fellow of the Oklahoma Bar Association.

Over his life as a lawyer, he has contributed to the civic life of Oklahoma City, serving on the boards of the Oklahoma City Community Foundation, YMCA Camp Classen, the Integris Nazih Zuhdi Transplant Institute, Integris Baptist Medical Center Foundation, the Downtown Rotary Club, and the Oklahoma Heritage Association. He served as chairman of both the Nichols Hills Planning Commission and the Nichols Hills Board of Adjustment. In addition, he serves on the Oklahoma State Board of Education, the Board of UMB Bank, and the Board of Oklahoma City University. In service to Oklahoma City University, he has served as a member of the Board of Trustees since 1987 and was chairman from 1999 to 2010. He has been elected as Chairman Emeritus of the university.

Shdeed has an honorary doctorate from OCU and received the 2010 Special Award of Merit. He also has been inducted into the Oklahoma Higher Education Hall of Fame.
