ELEVATE: Lessons for Life

OKLAHOMA CITY (October 30, 2018)  Several Oklahoma high schools are giving their seniors a taste of adulthood with a full day devoted to the next steps after graduation. At an Oct. 4 senior conference, Mustang High School students chose from sessions like “So You Want to Live on Your Own,” “Fishing for Financial Aid-Scholarships” and “Life-Prep Boot Camp.” Each session was led by professionals or experts.

Mustang seniors attend a session titled "Scholarship & Job Interview Survival Guide."

“The sessions come out of a need that seniors tell us they want more information about, said Dr. Teresa Wilkerson, Mustang High School principal. “Some students need to know how to live on their own after high school or apply for scholarships, while others want to join the military and need advice or simply want to be exposed to other career options.”

Mustang recently held a senior conference titled What’s the Next Step?, and for the second year in a row, students gave it an enthusiastic thumbs up.

“I think it’s really important to know what you’re going to do, where you’re going to go, have a plan,” said Mustang senior Kaitlyn de los Angeles. “If you just run out after high school and think you know what you’re going to do but don’t have anything set up for your future, you can get overwhelmed.”

Increasing numbers of districts are scheduling senior conferences to provide college, career and life readiness opportunities for students. Beginning in the 2019-20 school year, every Oklahoma school district will be required to implement ICAP, Individual Career Academic Planning, beginning with ninth-graders.

“Oklahoma has taken bold steps toward ensuring we equip every student with the tools needed for a successful future,” said Joy Hofmeister, State Superintendent of Public Instruction. “Senior conferences like Mustang’s are an innovative way to prepare students for the college and the work world.”
