Education conference EngageOK on the Road to conclude in Bixby, Moore

The Oklahoma State Department of Education (OSDE) will wrap up its fourth annual EngageOK on the Road summer education conference Thursday, July 18, in Bixby and Tuesday, July 23, in Moore.

The one-day conferences, which began July 15, are slated to visit five high schools in all, also making stops in Woodward, Lawton and Durant.

As many as 7,000 educators are expected to attend the free conference, with 2,000 expected in Bixby and 2,200 anticipated in Moore. The conference offers more than 100 professional development workshops. New sessions will share strategies for tying curriculum to Oklahoma’s academic standards and address best practices for teaching traumatized and at-risk students. In addition, the conference will include hands-on sessions on how to implement and grow Individual Career Academic Planning (ICAP) programs, designed to ensure all students are college, career and life ready upon high school graduation.

In “What Students Wish Their Teachers Knew,” a regional student panel will discuss topics such as what makes an effective teacher, testing, advice for a first-year teacher and the importance of genuine connections between teachers and students. The 11 a.m. sessions, facilitated by State Superintendent of Public Instruction Joy Hofmeister, will be held in the choir room at Bixby High School and the lecture hall at Southmoore High School.

At Southmoore, the 12 Oklahoma Teacher of the Year finalists will be revealed at the 8 a.m. general session in the Performing Arts Center. All finalists will be available for media interviews immediately after the completion of the announcement.

Conference doors open at 7 a.m. The conference begins daily at 8 a.m. and concludes at 3 p.m.
