Highlights Need for More Parental Choice

Oklahoma City, Okla – Joining other leaders from across the country, State Superintendent Ryan Walters is commemorating School Choice Week in Oklahoma this week. Applications for the Oklahoma Parental Choice Tax Credit program far outstripped the funding available for the program and show demand for school choice options in Oklahoma is among the strongest in the nation.

“Thanks to the Parental Choice Tax Credit, Oklahoma has joined other states that have empowered parents to make the best possible educational choice for their families – but more must be done,” said Walters. “The vast majority of studies find school choice programs help improve students’ academic performance, especially over time. Beginning now, the Legislature must expand School Choice programs across the board and not allow the radical teachers unions to continue their stranglehold on our schools and our students’ futures.”

The Parental Choice Tax Credit program, passed in 2023, gives parents more control over how and where their children are educated. It gives parents more control over how and where their children are educated. It gives Oklahoma parents up to $7,500 per tax year for private school expenses, tuition and fees, and parents who homeschool their child qualify for a $1,000 tax credit.
