We recently visited Elk City Public Schools, one of our Project AWARE districts, to see how the initiative is helping local educators support students as they combat stress and trauma in their lives. "We don't have the ability to take away the hard things students are going through, but we can give them a place that's safe where they can talk about those things with someone they trust." Project AWARE, which includes trauma-informed training and an increase of school counselors, has resulted in decreased suspension rates and an increase in attendance and academic achievement.
