Hofmeister calls for greater student access to high-quality computer science

OKLAHOMA CITY (Sept. 12, 2019) – While a new national report acknowledges Oklahoma has made progress in computer science coursework, State Superintendent of Public Instruction Joy Hofmeister noted the study also reveals that the state must do more or risk losing ground to other states.

According to the 2019 State of Computer Science Education report, released this week by the Code.org Advocacy Coalition, 45 percent of high schools nationwide teach computer science, while only 29 percent of Oklahoma high schools offer at least one computer science course.

Hofmeister testifies before U.S. Congressional subcommittee on the importance of trauma-informed instruction practices

OKLAHOMA CITY (Sept. 11, 2019) – State Superintendent of Public Instruction Joy Hofmeister testified today before the U.S. House Education and Labor Committee’s Subcommittee on Early Childhood, Elementary and Secondary Education. As one of four recognized leaders on the topic of supporting school-age children who have experienced trauma, Hofmeister addressed House members at a hearing entitled “The Importance of Trauma-Informed Practices in Education to Assist Students Impacted by Gun Violence and Other Adversities.”

September is School Attendance Awareness Month

OKLAHOMA CITY (September 5, 2019) - The Oklahoma State Department of Education (OSDE) has joined a nationwide initiative celebrating Attendance Awareness Month this September. The campaign seeks to emphasize the value of regular school attendance and reduce chronic absenteeism in the new school year.
