Oklahoma Teacher of the Year to be announced Tuesday

State Superintendent of Public Instruction Joy Hofmeister will announce the 2018 Oklahoma Teacher of the Year at a ceremony at State Fair Park in Oklahoma City on Tuesday, Sept. 19. The honored teacher will succeed 2017 Oklahoma Teacher of the Year Jon Hazell and become the state’s ambassador of teaching after his term expires June 30, 2018.
 
The 12 finalists for 2018 Oklahoma Teacher of the Year were announced July 10.

Hofmeister says Oklahoma schools stand ready to receive students displaced by Hurricane Harvey

OKLAHOMA CITY (September 7, 2017) – In the wake of devastation in Louisiana and Texas, Oklahoma is ready to receive children displaced by Hurricane Harvey. State Superintendent of Public Instruction Joy Hofmeister said the Oklahoma State Department of Education (OSDE) will make every effort to reduce bureaucratic barriers that might prevent a student’s immediate placement in an Oklahoma school.
 
Under the McKinney – Vento Education Act, students displaced by a natural disaster are to be considered homeless and enrolled immediately.

Oklahoma ACT participation increase highest in the nation

OKLAHOMA CITY (Sept. 7, 2017) – Oklahoma increased its ACT participation by 29 percent in one year – the largest gain of ACT-tested graduates in the country. Oklahoma joins the collection of states identified by ACT as having 100 percent of 2017 graduating seniors taking the national college entrance exam. Of those states, Oklahoma tied for 10th place for the top average composite score.
