Redbud School Grants

In 2021, the Legislature enacted Senate Bill 229 – the Redbud School Funding Act. This bill directs a portion of medical marijuana tax revenue for annual distribution to eligible charter schools and public school districts for acquiring and improving school buildings. For Fiscal Year 2022, $38.5 million was apportioned to be used for these grants. School districts and eligible charter schools that are below the state average in local property taxes and the county-wide millage per student are eligible to receive these funds. Additionally, to be considered “eligible,” a charter school must provide in-person or blended instruction to a minimum of two-thirds of enrolled students as the primary means of instruction.

Because these funds are being collected and allocated within the same fiscal year, the full amount of the grant cannot be allocated all at one time. Grant funds received in January 2022 reflect the funding collected to date. However, the expected amount for each district for the full year can be found below under Grant Recipients. The remaining funds will be allocated in June of 2022.

School districts and eligible charter schools that are below the state average in local property taxes for the building fund and the county-wide millage per student are eligible to receive these funds.
