2013 A to F Report Card Requirements and Timeline Updates

The United States Department of Education has recently released a new set of guidelines for school report cards. In addition to the state requirements outlined by Oklahoma law, this year’s report card will contain additional student performance information.

Wave Data Requirements

Overview

Districts will use the Assessment Post-Code application to complete assessment "Record Editing" during the assessment "Correction Window." In years past, record editing was completed through the testing vendor; this year it will be completed in the Wave.

Districts will need to CERTIFY assessment demographics and testing status during the 30-day correction window for accurate calculation of their A-F report cards. There will not be a second opportunity to correct and re-certify assessment data for A-F.

Milken Award Winner to be Recognized by State Board of Education, Legislature

Tammera Mittelstet, the 2012 winner of the $25,000 Milken Educator Award, will be recognized by the State Board of Eduction and the State Legislature in separate ceremonies on Thursday, April 25, 2013.

Mittelstet is a Gifted Resource Coordinator at Stillwater’s Highland Park Elementary and Will Rogers Elementary. She was awarded the prize in a surprise ceremony in November by State Superintendent Janet Barresi and Milken Family Foundation Board Member Dr. Thomas Boysen.

Cohort Graduation Rate Guide

The Oklahoma State Department of Education (OSDE) has developed an implementation plan to calculate the state’s Federal Four-Year Adjusted Cohort Graduation Rate using student-level data transmitted to the state and certified by districts.  The student-level data is received at the state from myriad local student information systems via the Oklahoma’s statewide SIF infrastructure and captured by the real-time Wave state student information system.

Teaching to the Test

As I meet with teachers from across the state, I hear a common theme. I talk with working groups of teachers here at the state department. I've had the opportunity to visit with past and present teachers of the year. I also have roundtable discussions with teachers at the school districts I visit on my Raise the Grade Together tours. I listen to superintendents in my leadership advisory group. These educators tell me they are frustrated with “teaching to the test.”   Parents and community members often mirror these sentiments. I agree!
