Welcome to the hub for English Language Arts information and support for Oklahoma educators and students!

This page supports Oklahoma teachers and school districts with the successful implementation of the Oklahoma Academic Standards for English Language Arts. The Oklahoma State Department of Education collaborates with Oklahoma educators to develop and identify high-quality resources for teachers and districts. Oklahoma resources include the English Language Arts Curriculum Framework, past professional development slideshows, writing contest information, and access to instructional communities for professional growth.

2021 Standards

Download the new 2021 Oklahoma Academic Standards for English Language Arts. Visit the English Language Arts Standards page for implementation documents, including a revised appendix, crosswalks of the 2016 and 2021 standards, and vertical progressions for grades PK-5, 3-8, and 6-12.

Testing Update & Resources

The 2023 OSTP for English Language Arts will be aligned to the 2016 Oklahoma Academic Standards, but it will have field test items aligned to the 2021 standards. Therefore, the 2022-2023 school year is an opportunity for schools to implement the 2021 standards, which are clearer and more detailed than the 2016 standards. Teachers who use the 2021 standards to guide their curriculum and instruction will cover most of the skills from the 2016 standards.

Since revisions did take place and some objectives were deleted or moved, there are some skills from the 2016 standards that teachers can use to supplement the 2021 standards. Those skills are linked in this document and are also linked to their 2016 objective analysis pages from the ELA Curriculum Framework.

The 2021 standards will begin to be assessed in Spring 2024.

High-Quality Instructional Materials

To provide guidance to teachers, schools, and districts as they make decisions about the best high-quality instructional materials (HQIM) for their students, the OSDE now has reviews of PK-5 ELA instructional materials. The reviews include scores and rationales to help inform stakeholders as they decide which materials to adopt. Blank rubrics for ELA Grades PK-2 and ELA Grades 3-5 are also available if districts would like to conduct their own reviews. The three-tiered structure of the rubric and the three overall ratings are explained on the Approved Titles page. Contact Rebecca Morales, Director of Instructional Materials, with any questions.

Imagine Language and Literacy

Imagine Language and Literacy is a supplemental, adaptive online curriculum that provides targeted instruction in all four domains of literacy — reading, writing, speaking, and listening. Its flexibility makes it suited for various instructional settings including whole-class, small-group, and one-on-one. Imagine Language & Literacy can be utilized both in school and at home to reinforce and support students in meeting grade-level proficiencies aligned to the Oklahoma Academic Standards for English Language Arts. Imagine Language and Literacy is free for students in kindergarten, first, second, and third grades and students who are reading below grade level in grades 4-6.
