*phone vibrates* Another text message.

The notification bar on my phone is out of control — e-mails, texts, and a couple missed calls and voicemails. Facebook and Twitter are blowing up. I say this with complete humility, though, and not to brag. It hasn’t set in that I have been selected as a Finalist for National Teacher of the Year.

Oklahoma’s Teacher of the Year among four finalists for National Teacher of the Year award

Oklahoma City (Jan. 12, 2016)  An Oklahoma teacher is one step closer to receiving the profession's highest honor.  Shawn Sheehan of Norman High School today was named one of four finalists for the National Teacher of the Year award.

Statewide public school enrollment continues to increase in 2015


The number of students enrolled in Oklahoma public schools increased by more than 4,000 in 2015, continuing an annual upward trend.

A total of 692,670 students were enrolled in pre-kindergarten through twelfth grade at the start of the school year, an increase of 4,370 over the 2014 total of 688,300 and 33,055 more than in 2010.

State Superintendent of Public Instruction Joy Hofmeister emphasized that the state should be prepared to continue serving a growing student population each year.

On Dec. 23, 2015, the Oklahoma Secretary of Finance declared a General Revenue failure and instructed all state agencies to reduce specific appropriation accounts by 3 percent. Agencies were also required to submit their proposed plan to the state by Jan. 7.

State Board of Education makes required 3% budget cut to preK-12 in wake of revenue failure


OKLAHOMA CITY (Jan. 7, 2016) — In the wake of a revenue failure affecting all of Oklahoma state government, the State Board of Education today approved a required 3-percent reduction in a $46.7 million funding cut for preK-12 public education. The reduction impacts the remaining six months of Fiscal Year 2016, which ends June 30.

Supt. Hofmeister comments on Oklahoma's performance in 'Quality Counts' report


OKLAHOMA CITY (Jan. 7, 2016) — Oklahoma ranked 46th in the nation with a grade of “D+” in an annual national report released today that measures states on academic performance and outcomes across a detailed range of criteria.

Oklahoma’s overall score of “D+” in the 20th edition of Education Week’s Quality Counts was below the national score of “C” and the same grade received last year. Although Oklahoma gained two positions in the overall rankings since last year, it scored higher than only five states — Alabama, Idaho, New Mexico, Mississippi and Nevada.

On January 7, the State Board of Education will hold a special meeting to address the budget cuts directive from the state's Office of Management and Enterprise Services (OMES) in light of the revenue failure for the remainder of fiscal year 2016.
