State Board of Education postpones SLOs, SOOs in TLE evaluation

 OKLAHOMA CITY (Feb. 26, 2015) — The Oklahoma State Board of Education today voted unanimously to postpone one element of the quantitative portion of the state’s Teacher and Leader Effectiveness (TLE) system that recently had been discredited by research.

As a result of the board vote, Student Learning Objectives (SLOs) and Student Outcome Objectives (SOOs) will not be used this school year as a proxy for Value-Added Models (VAMs). Other recommendations for research-based improvement must be made legislatively.

Supt. Hofmeister praises Senate, House committees for passage of bills to reduce excessive testing

OKLAHOMA CITY (Feb. 24, 2015) — State Superintendent of Public Instruction Joy Hofmeister lauded both the House and Senate Education Committees for recently approving bills aimed at reducing seven end-of-instruction (EOI) exams.

The test-reduction measures — Senate Bill 707, authored by state Sen. John Ford, and House Bill 1272, authored by state Rep. Dennis Casey — direct the State Board of Education to develop recommendations for high school graduation requirements, one or more assessments that colleges and universities utilize to determine college-readiness.

TLE Commission approves recommendations to strengthen evaluations

OKLAHOMA CITY (Feb. 19, 2015) — The Teacher & Leader Effectiveness (TLE) Commission today voted unanimously to approve several recommended changes in an effort to have a more valid and reliable framework for teacher and leader evaluation.

Key recommendations include delaying implementation of TLE’s quantitative component for two years and eliminating the SLOs (Student Learning Objectives) / SOOs (Student Outcome Objectives) as a proxy for Value-Added Models (VAMs).
