Teacher Certification Information

The Oklahoma State Department of Education (OSDE) teacher certification office provides information regarding traditional certification, renewal, adding certification areas, transferring out-of-state certificates, and other subjects.

Teacher Certification Testing

The Office of Educational Quality and Accountability (OEQA), a separate agency of state government, is authorized by law to develop and administer the competency-based teacher tests. The following are currently required for Oklahoma teacher certification:

  • the Oklahoma Subject Area Test(s) (OSAT)
  • the Praxis Performance Assessment for Teachers (PPAT)

Interested applicants can find test information on the website of the Certification Examinations for Oklahoma Educators (CEOE).

Fine Arts educators must take an Oklahoma Subject Area Test (OSAT) in the area they will be teaching: dance, speech/drama/debate, vocal music, instrumental music, and visual art education.

Alternative Certification Requirements

For those interested in alternative certification, be sure to follow the guidelines for alternative placement.

Participants in the Alternative Placement program must complete 6 to 18 college credit hours of professional education, or 90-270 clock hours of professional development approved by an Oklahoma school district, depending on prior education and experience. Professional education requirements must be completed within 3 years after entering the Alternative Placement program.

NOTE: All participants will be required to complete a college credit course addressing classroom management and a college credit course addressing general or subject-specific pedagogical principles, or approved equivalents.

For fine arts specific class options, contact Dr. Elizabeth Maughan, (405) 522-0863 or elizabeth.maughan@sde.ok.gov.
