Annual enrollment in Oklahoma public schools increases in 2014, Continues upward trend

OKLAHOMA CITY (Dec. 3, 2014) – The number of students in Oklahoma public schools increased for the 2014-15 school year, keeping in line with a steady, long-term trend.

Total enrollment for 2014 in pre-kindergarten through 12th grade is 688,300 students, an increase of 6,722 over last year’s total of 681,578. From 2010 through 2014, enrollment grew by 28,685.

The following rules were approved by the State Board of Education and have been submitted to the legislature for review.  Administrative rules must receive the approval of the legislature and the Governor before they may be implemented.

U.S. Department of Education restores Oklahoma’s No Child Left Behind Flexibility Waiver for remainder of school year

OKLAHOMA CITY (Nov. 24) — The U.S. Department of Education (USDE) announced today it is reinstating Oklahoma’s No Child Left Behind (NCLB) Flexibility Waiver for the 2014-15 school year. Although the waiver had been pulled after state lawmakers repealed Common Core academic standards deemed college- and career-ready, U.S. Secretary of Education Arne Duncan reconsidered that earlier decision after Oklahoma higher education officials determined the state’s existing academic standards were sufficient.

State Board of Education approves charter school plan for two juvenile detention facilities

OKLAHOMA CITY (Nov. 19, 2014) — The State Board of Education today unanimously approved an application submitted by Oklahoma’s Office of Juvenile Affairs to sponsor charter schools at juvenile detention facilities in Manitou and Tecumseh.

Under the plan, the State Board of Education will sponsor the Oklahoma Youth Academy Charter School at the facilities, both of which have been served by the local school districts —Tipton and Tecumseh, respectively.

Gov. Mary Fallin and state schools Superintendent Janet Barresi host the annual event.
